NCAA’s new international rules put Wisconsin’s season in jeopardy

The NCAA is pushing a new rule that would end Greg Gard’s recruiting strategy as we know it. Not only are the Wisconsin Badgers looking at major changes for the future, but there’s a chance this rule greatly affects their 2026-27 season.

Jonathan Givony simplified the NCAA’s new international recruiting guidelines, which he says are pushing international players out of college sports entirely. 

“ACB, France, Italy, Australian NBL and anyone who’s ever played for a EuroLeague team, even for next to nothing, are suddenly permanently ineligible?” Givony asked in response to Kevin Sweeney’s post with the NCAA’s official statement.

For reference, Wisconsin has six players on its roster who have played overseas: Austin Rapp, Hayden Jones, Isaac Riddle, Jackson Ball, Owen Foxwell and Victory Onuetu. This rule wouldn’t only affect Wisconsin, far from it. But is there a scenario in which this passes ahead of the 2026-27 season, and the Badgers are forced to forfeit the season? While that seems unlikely, crazier things have happened.
