Jürgen Klopp has managed to turn a corner in comparison to last season, with all appearing rosy at Anfield of late. There aren’t many negatives attached to the Reds right now, but one minor concern could relate to Cody Gakpo, who joined the club from PSV Eindhoven in January.
Upon his arrival on English shores, the Dutchman made quite an impact and managed to reduce Darwin Núñez to a place on the bench. Gakpo signed for Liverpool halfway through the campaign, yet by the end of the season, he had started 17 games in the Premier League. Núñez, for context, made just 19 starts despite joining the club six months earlier. Gakpo looked like a versatile and offensive performer, and one who was tipped to follow in the footsteps of Roberto Firmino as an attacking player who naturally dropped into deeper areas to help his midfield teammates.
The Dutch international was painting himself as quite a complete talent. He had thrived on the left wing during his time representing PSV — which is why he ended up deserving his transfer move to England — and when he started playing for the Reds, he looked like a natural in the middle.
Everything is looking good on Merseyside right now. After 12 Premier League matches so far this term, Liverpool ranks second in the division, just one point behind last season’s champions at the summit — while also reaching the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup and cruising in the Europa League.
