Arguably the most important match in the Premier League this weekend is that between Newcastle and Chelsea, which has direct implications for the UEFA Champions League next season. So expect St James’ Park to be packed with pressure from the Magpies fans.
Newcastle at a critical juncture in the Premier League
All the fans will be hoping that Newcastle have had enough rest to take to the field against the Blues after a frustrating draw against Brighton. In their penultimate home game, the Magpies are level on 63 points with their opponents this weekend and four points behind Arsenal, who will now focus their energies on the Premier League.
However, Eddie Howe’s side could end up dealing with a lot of problems in the event of a defeat, especially considering that they have dropped points in two of their previous three games, meaning they could miss out on the top five.
For this weekend’s clash, Eddie Howe will need to find solutions to deal with Joelinton’s absence should that happen. In addition, Lewis Hall is out for the rest of the season with a foot problem, joining Jamal Lascelles. Finally, Matt Targett (posterior thigh) is expected to miss out and Fabian Schar’s participation is uncertain.
Chelsea must overcome negative record against Newcastle
Chelsea are in better shape for the clash after beating Liverpool last weekend, but Enzo Maresca certainly hasn’t forgotten that it was Newcastle who were responsible for their elimination from the EFL Cup. What’s more, considering the aggregate score this season, an indigestible 7-1 puts the Blues on alert.
Even so, it’s worth noting that Maresca has managed to end the long oscillation that hit Chelsea after Christmas, making the squad competitive again and with the recovery of Cole Palmer. At the moment, the Blues are on their best winning streak of the season, with it all starting on April 20 against Fulham.
Marc Guiu’s return to the starting line-up is unlikely, but he will be an option on the bench to be used mainly in the second half. Wesley Fofana (posterior thigh) is out for the season after undergoing surgery, while reserve defender Aaron Anselmino is also out of action.
