Newcastle United, a Premier League team, responded to Sandro Tonali’s one-year ban for allegedly breaking betting regulations by criticizing him.
On July 3, 2023, Sandro Tonali moved from AC Milan to Newcastle United for a transfer price of €64 million.
The 23-year-old Italian defensive midfielder has now participated in ten Premier League games for the team in all competitions, scoring one goal each time.
Therefore, it was anticipated that, prior to being involved in a betting controversy, he would be a well-known character at the club.
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and Italian prosecutors are looking into the young player for accessing illicit websites to wager on football games and for making bets on AC Milan games while he was still under contract with the team.
While acknowledging his addiction to betting, Sandro Tonali refrained from confirming that he has wagered on AC Millan games. Though investigations into other aspects of the allegations are still ongoing, the Italian prosecutors found him guilty of breaking betting regulations.
Newcastle United responded to the news by releasing the following statement on Wednesday: “Newcastle United can confirm that Sandro Tonali is the subject of an investigation concerning illegal betting activity by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and the Italian Prosecutor’s Office.”
“Sandro is cooperating with all relevant authorities and is fully engaged in the investigation.”
“The club will continue to offer its complete support to him and his family.”
“Sandro Tonali and Newcastle United are unable to provide additional comment at this time due to this ongoing process.”
