Liverpool defender Calum Scanlon arrived from Birmingham City in 2021 and made his first-team debut for the Reds earlier this season.
Calum Scanlon is keen to step into Liverpool’s top four after making his first-team debut. The 18-year-old has progressed relatively quickly since joining from Birmingham City in 2021.
Scanlon immediately became a regular in the youth academy and later progressed to the U21 team. He has been a peripheral figure in Liverpool’s first team since being included in Jurgen Klopp’s pre-season squad.
Scanlon made the big decision after hearing Liverpool’s interest while at Birmingham City. While many players would have opted to stay with the Championship side as an easy way to secure regular first-team minutes, the left-back took a different approach.
“It was a no-brainer really,” Scanlon told Liverpool’s club website. “I knew what to do. I have found it to be the best for my development. “When I first heard that Liverpool were interested in signing me, I was very happy and flattered.
I went to the training ground, met the coaches and knew I had found the perfect place to develop. It was surreal. “It was a great club with a great history and great fans.
It was really everything you want. I knew right away that this was a special club I wanted to be a part of.”Scanlon’s decision paid off when he made his Europa League debut for Liverpool against Toulouse in October and his second against Union SG early the following month.
England U19s will likely hope to emulate Liverpool’s youth quartet, although they are likely to split their time between the first team and the U21s. “In the short term, I want to continue to enjoy my football and give my best every day, every session, in the gym and training – on and off the pitch.
I really want to get better Scanlon added. “Long term I want to get into the first team here. I’ve looked at players like Curtis Jones, Trent [Alexander-Arnold], Jarell Quansah and more recently Harvey Elliott. They’re all great players on a great journey and like me.
It showed that young players, even young academy players, have a journey and that if they work hard enough, they can be rewarded for their efforts. “It’s something I’m looking forward to and hope to be able to achieve one day.”
