The Dutch media were not impressed with Liverpool striker Cody Gakpo’s performance for Holland last night.
Holland beat Ireland 1-0 thanks to Wout Weghorst’s first goal and Cody Gakpo was brought into the starting line-up. The 24-year-old played just behind the striker in midfield but failed to impress on the night.
Gakpo was replaced by Joey Warman after a poor performance in the second half. And it’s no exaggeration to say that the Dutch media have been critical of the Liverpool star’s recent international performances.
The Dutch press is not impressed with Hakpo’s recent international achievements.
Voetbal rated Oranje Gakpo 5.5 for his performance and pointed out that he was wasteful in front of goal last night.
The report said: “The first substitute, a Liverpool player, is not playing well.“He made shots and sometimes put them in the way of his teammates. “He created chances, but not to the level we expected from him.
“Voetbal Primeur was a bit more generous and gave the Dutchman a 6 out of 10.According to reports, Gakpo was just starting to adjust to the game and was replaced in time.
They said: “Gakpo were chasing it before the break but seemed to relax a bit in the second half.“He constantly overcame the Irish defense with his pace. “But I was disappointed that Gakpo left first,” he said.
Gakpo has struggled to break into Liverpool’s front three since picking up an injury against Tottenham last September. The former PSV man has been used as a midfielder at times this season.
Jurgen Klopp named him in his midfield three for last weekend’s game against Brentford. Klopp praised Gakpo as a very versatile player. However, I have a feeling that his best position is as a striker rather than a midfielder.
He wasn’t at his best for Ronald Koeman’s side last night, but that could be down to Liverpool’s lack of minutes following his return from injury.
