Opta’s legendary supercomputer has predicted where Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool will end up in the Premier League this season. The Reds went top of the table after beating Crystal Palace 2-1 at Selhurst Park this weekend, while Aston Villa beat Arsenal 1-0 to ensure Klopp’s men hang on for at least next week.
Despite a disastrous 2022/2023 season, Liverpool have improved significantly this season thanks to a revamped midfield. After 16 Premier League games, the Reds are in fourth place with 37 points. This is four places higher than current champions Manchester City.
At this stage last year, Liverpool had 22 fewer points than that. After fiddling with all the algorithms and mathematical devices at its disposal, supercomputer Opta has updated its predictions for where Liverpool will finish this season, offering both good and bad news for Klopp’s side. The good news is that Liverpool have regained their Champions League qualification and the bad news is that they are in second place behind Manchester City. Man City remain Opta’s favorites with a 47.8% chance of winning another league title, while Liverpool have just a 31.5% chance of topping the list, although that percentage has increased since the start of the month December. The teams most likely to win the league are Arsenal with 16.6%, Aston Villa with 4.1% and Tottenham with 0.1%.Opta believe Liverpool will finish second, with a 32.4% chance of finishing second this season, while the Reds are all but guaranteed a fourth-place finish.
The rest of December could be a crucial period for Red’s season, with league games against Manchester United and Arsenal at Anfield, while Liverpool host Newcastle United on Merseyside on New Year’s Day. If Liverpool can get through the difficult festive period without making any major mistakes, Opta’s supercomputer could become favorites for Liverpool to take the title.
