New England announced the signing of running back Trayveon Williams, making room on the roster by releasing defensive lineman Eric Johnson II.

Williams, 28, spent his first six seasons primarily playing on special teams for the Cincinnati Bengals, and reportedly underwent a tryout at One Patriot Place this week alongside fellow running back Jordan Mims, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2.

New England needed training camp depth at the position, entering the week with only five players under contract at the position. Williams likely won’t be tasked with contributing on the offensive side of the ball in any significant fashion, but has returned 33 kicks for 743 yards in his career.

The Texas A&M product also broke school records for single-season all-purpose yards and rushing yards in 2018.
