Manchester City have been handed an injury setback with Jack Grealish suffering a groin injury against Luton Town on Tuesday night and now facing a race against time to be fit for next weekend’s trip to Anfield.
Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Jack Grealish suffered a suspected groin injury in Tuesday night’s FA Cup win at Luton Town – leaving him in a race against the clock to be fit for his side’s trip to Anfield next weekend.
Grealish, 28, was replaced by Jeremy Doku after 38 minutes in Tuesday’s win 6-2 win at Kenilworth Road, two weeks on from suffering a similar fate against Copenhagen in City’s round-of-16 first-leg tie in Denmark.
Speaking after the game, Guardiola provided an update on the England international, who appeared to be visibly distressed on the substitutes’ bench after being withdrawn from the action, and admitted he “has to recover well” if he is to return and help the Cityzens’ quest for Premier League and Champions League glory.
“I didn’t speak to doctors but I think he complained a bit about the groin,” revealed Guardiola. “Maybe a little bit similar. He felt really good but unfortunately was injured again at the beginning of the game.
“It’s been a tough season for him, has to recover well and help us when he’s able to come back.”
The former Aston Villa midfielder, who joined Manchester City for a deal in the region of £100m in 2021, has started just seven of 26 Premier League games for the Etihad outfit this campaign after being struck down by a string of injuries.
His latest setback puts him at risk of missing City’s hosting of Manchester United on Sunday and their trip to Anfield on March 10, with Guardiola’s side knowing they could leapfrog the Reds should they earn just a second league win at Liverpool since 2003. Currently, just one point separates the two teams at the top of the Premier League table.
Grealish, though, won’t be the only star in a race against the clock to be fit for the heavyweight clash next weekend as Liverpool are also suffering from a plethora of injuries – with 13 first-team stars currently sidelined.
In addition to Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Dominik Szoboszlai, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alisson Becker, who all missed Sunday’s League Cup final win over Chelsea, Ryan Gravenberch is set to miss the next two games at least after suffering a ligament injury at Wembley, which required him to be stretchered off inside the opening 30 minutes.
Wataru Endo, meanwhile, was pictured leaving the stadium in a protective boot after a gruelling 120 minutes at Wembley.
