The Catalans are seeking a replacement for Xavi, who will leave when the season ends, and president Joan Laporta had sought out Guardiola for his advice with the Manchester City boss suggesting that he look to employ the Brighton tactician.

De Zerbi has made an instant impact since arriving at the Amex as a relatively unknown quantity. The Italian was hired to replace Graham Potter and guided the Seagulls to Europe, playing an impressive brand of football whilst doing so, thus attracting interest from top clubs.

Barcelona though are reluctant to pay the fee required to get De Zerbi out of his Brighton contract, reports Sport. It is understood that the Seagulls have protected their asset and will need a fee of £12.8million if they are to let him seek pastures new.

Liverpool are likely to be buoyed by Barcelona’s decision as they look to find a replacement for the outgoing Jurgen Klopp, who stunned Anfield by announcing he would leave at the end of the season. De Zerbi has caused the German’s side problems and they are likely to consider him an option.

The 44-year-old’s contract runs until 2026 and he said earlier this week: “Yes. I have a contract. I have decided nothing. My focus is on Brighton – 100 per cent.”

They are several top European outfits looking to appoint new bosses, with each one’s move likely to have a knock-on effect. Xabi Alonso looks likely to lead Bayer Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title, bar a late collapse, and as a result his stock has gone through the roof.

Liverpool are keen on their former player but Bayern Munich too could go after the man who is seeking to end their dominance. Reports suggest the Spaniard may opt to remain in the Bundesliga, which would leave the Reds to look elsewhere.

Barcelona meanwhile have been linked with Thomas Tuchel, who will be the man to leave Bayern once the season ends. He opened the door to coaching in Spain earlier this season whilst Hansi Flick, a Champions League winner, is also being considered.
