This stat is worked out using each Premier League player’s xG during the campaign. By taking the number of goals a player has scored away from their xG, we can see who has underperformed their shooting stats the most this season.
It might not come as a huge surprise to learn that Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford has been the most wasteful player in the Premier League this season. The 26-year-old was at his prolific best last time around, but he hasn’t been as fortunate in front of goal this time. In total, Rashford has underperformed his xG by 2.7 goals which is the most of any United player and any other player in the league.
Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson and Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus have also been guilty of missing some guilt-edge chances this season and they each feature high up on this list.
Alan Shearer is one pundit who thinks that Jesus needs to improve on his final product as he told Match of the Day: “He’s not a goalscorer, he never has been. “When you look at his numbers, he brings more to Arsenal’s game than goals, he’s got one in nine this season. That will improve and that has to improve.”
Darwin Nunez is undoubtedly one of the best players to watch in the league, but he’s not always reliable in front of goal. In his first 14 matches, he’s underperformed his xG by 1.8 goals.
The majority of the list is made up of forward players, but there are some notable exceptions to this. Fabian Schar has been Newcastle’s most wasteful player up until this point and Anel Ahmedhodzic has been guilty of missing chances for Sheffield United.
