Retired UNC basketball coach Roy Williams helps unveil $5M in new debt relief for Western NC

Verizon and ForgiveCo recently announced an additional $5 million in debt relief for Western North Carolina residents affected by Hurricane Helene, bringing the total debt relief to $15 million. This new commitment will support over 1,700 residents still recovering from the storm’s devastation.

In January, Verizon and ForgiveCo initially cleared $10 million in debt for 6,500 families. The debt relief campaign was part of Verizon’s ongoing commitment to recovery following Hurricane Helene’s sweeping devastation. According to Leigh Anne Lanier, Atlantic South Market President at Verizon, “Verizon believes in the power of connection, not only through our technology but through the bonds we build with the communities we serve”.

Legendary UNC basketball coach Roy Williams was on hand to help unveil the news. “That’s my home,” Williams said. “It was killed, destroyed – everything was so bad and the fact that Verizon is stepping up means a great deal. I stayed the summertime up there and there are still people who haven’t come close to getting back to where they were.” Williams, a North Carolina native, has been instrumental in sharing the news with impacted families, bringing hope and relief to those affected.

The debt relief program operates on a “random acts of kindness” model, purchasing consumer debt in affected areas and notifying recipients through surprise letters, emails, and text messages. No applications are required, and all applicable debt has been forgiven.

Verizon’s commitment to the community goes beyond debt relief. The company has also donated $400,000 to United Way of North Carolina immediately following the storm. Craig Antico, Founder and CEO of ForgiveCo, emphasized that “unpayable debt is a heavy burden that causes hardship for countless hardworking Americans. Often triggered by sudden medical events or accidents, the impact of natural disasters can further destabilize families and limit opportunities for generations”.

As the community continues to recover, Verizon’s support serves as a powerful reminder that no one is alone, and together, they’ll rise stronger.
