Rio Ferdinand is now becoming increasingly convinced that Liverpool can seriously challenge Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title.
Liverpool produced a superb performance on Wednesday night, beating Chelsea 4-1 at Anfield.
Diogo Jota and Conor Bradley had Liverpool 2-0 up by half-time with Dominik Szoboszlai adding number three from a Bradley cross.
Christopher Nkunku pulled one back for Chelsea before Luis Diaz killed the game off, firing home from close range.
Liverpool stay top of the Premier League table, five points clear of Manchester City but having played a game more than Pep Guardiola’s side.
Rio Ferdinand hails Liverpool after beating Chelsea
Liverpool have now gone 15 games unbeaten in the Premier League and have just once this season.
The Reds deservedly sit top of the table right now but many believe that City will eventually overtake them and take top spot.
Liverpool won’t be paying any attention to those predictions though and will have genuine hope of an emotional title win.
Jurgen Klopp has already announced that he will be leaving Liverpool this summer and that leaves the Reds with a chance to do something truly memorable.
Liverpool haven’t been at their best at times this season but Wednesday’s display has really impressed pundit Rio Ferdinand.
The former Manchester United defender told TNT Sports (31/01/, 22:30) that this display against Chelsea was the first time he has watched Liverpool this season and genuinely believed that they can challenge City.

Ferdinand raved about how every Liverpool player now looks to be shining under Klopp and is playing at an eight out of 10 level, backing them to challenge City all the way if they keep this up.
“Do you know what… this team, today, it’s the first time I’ve watched them and thought they could push City. I’ve seen them a few times this season and I thought they weren’t firing on all cylinders but now, every single player looks like they know their duty, they now their job, and they are working at minimum eight out of 10. It was a really, really solid, all-round performance that will only breed confidence throughout this whole place,” he added.
Liverpool simply had to rebuild their midfield last summer and their work in the transfer market has done them the world of good.
New signings have made an impact and Klopp has been able to bring young players into the side – like Bradley – and Liverpool haven’t slipped up.
The Reds keep moving forward despite injuries and international call-ups, so it looks like we are about to see another fierce Liverpool v City battle for the title.
