Roberto De Zerbi truth should be clear to Liverpool amid latest Rúben Amorim claim

Liverpool is considering its options ahead of Jürgen Klopp leaving. Roberto De Zerbi, as suggested by Jamie Carragher today, should be right up there in the running.

It was inevitable that a number of names would be linked with Liverpool as soon as Jürgen Klopp announced that he was departing. But we are so far no closer to knowing who will take over from the German.

Earlier on, The Athletic reported that Liverpool is now ‘unlikely’ to pick Sporting CP head coach Rúben Amorim. Amid the search for a succession, Jamie Carragher has suggested that Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi could be the obvious candidate. New Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes tried to take him to Bournemouth before he ended up in the Premier League.

With Xabi Alonso out of the picture for Liverpool and Bayern Munich, the number of candidates to take over from Klopp and Thomas Tuchel this summer has dwindled. For both clubs, there are fewer options on the table than many might have assumed.

De Zerbi has been dismissed in some quarters, but the reality with him should be clear. The Italian, 43, has a much larger body of evidence to back up his credentials than the other main options (or former options, in the case of Alonso). At Sassuolo and then Shakhtar Donetsk, he did an excellent job. His Brighton side is massively overperforming, even if that has now become the norm.

Tainted in some fan’s eyes perhaps by the fact that he is already in England and is therefore more of a known quantity, De Zerbi’s record with Brighton in Europe this season has also been used as a case against him. The Seagulls were knocked out of the Europa League by AS Roma in the last-16, however, and that is hardly a disgrace.

A team of Brighton’s size even being in Europe in the first place is impressive. It currently lies 10th in the Premier League — only six points behind Manchester United — without really having the squad to compete on both fronts. And of course, as Liverpool knows well, its entire midfield was ripped up last summer, with Alexis Mac Allister and Moisés Caicedo both leaving.

There has been a school of thought for some that De Zerbi is closer to Pep Guardiola in terms of his management style than he is to Klopp. You could argue that being the case for Alonso as well, however, and even Klopp’s own team now is far closer to Guardiola’s than what it was when he first arrived from Borussia Dortmund. The ‘heavy metal’ tag has long been outdated.

While it is difficult to understand exactly what people want with De Zerbi — what they would need to see to view him as being an even better candidate for Liverpool — that is not to say that he is the best option out there. That is the whole point of being led by the data, though.

Those in charge of the search at Liverpool will not be swayed by the fact that a name currently abroad might, for some reason, feel more appealing. Likewise, they will also have far more data points to work with — and likely knew a while ago what Alonso was thinking. Whoever Liverpool picks, they will earn or be overlooked for the role on merit, not misconception.
