Manchester United legend Roy Keane has commented on the news that Jurgen Klopp will step down as Liverpool manager this summer after more than eight years in charge.
Roy Keane believes Jurgen Klopp made the “right decision” to step down as Liverpool manager at the end of the season. Klopp informed Liverpool chiefs of his decision in November and announced his decision on Friday, explaining that he “lacks the energy” to perform at his best. And Keane reacted to the news by admitting that Klopp will be “sadly wanted” and “an outstanding player in the Premier League”. He told ITV: “I’m not worried about introductions. I’m just sad he’s leaving the game.I
think he was a great manager at Liverpool and a great hero in the Premier League. But if he thinks he needs a break, I think he made the right decision. He will be missed. AdJurgen Klopp was forced into a decision by Liverpool after realizing an “ideal” exit was not possible.
“I’ve enjoyed watching him and listening to him. I think he’s done great in the Premier League and obviously he’s going to be a big loser, but if he thinks he needs a break, I think he’s made the right decision.”
Klopp was surprised when Sir Alex Ferguson decided to quit as Manchester United manager in 2002. He eventually reversed course and was asked if he could change his mind between now and the end of the season. “Not!” Klopp said: “Has Alex Ferguson resigned and changed his mind? I did not know that.
I have a lot of respect for Alex, but no. Even if we win this season, my feelings won’t change. I had to make a decision. I thought carefully. This has nothing to do with this season’s results. Most importantly, the foundation of this team is very solid. So it’s a good time to hand it over to someone else.
“Keane, United’s captain at the time, saw no similarities between the two situations. “Times are different,” he explained. “Manchester United’s manager did that at the start of the season and we won three titles in a row. Maybe it was a bit of a decline.
“At the time, subconsciously I thought it would have an impact on the dressing room. We had a lot of experienced players and I thought we would continue to do that. Then he decided to go back. We just started.”
