Simone Inzaghi makes decision over replacing Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager

Simone Inzaghi is committed to Inter Milan and would reject Liverpool’s advances should the Merseyside giants approach him to succeed Jurgen Klopp in the summer.

The 47-year-old took charge of Inter in 2021 and has since steered the Nerazzurri to two Coppa Italia and three Supercoppa Italiana titles, while also leading the club to their first Champions League final in over a decade last term.

After finishing 18 points adrift of last season’s eventual Serie A champions Napoli , Inter sit 15 points clear at the top of the Italian top flight this time around and Inzaghi has won plenty of admirers across Europe with his work at the San Siro.

According to Italian publication La Gazzetta dello Sport, Liverpool have placed Inzaghi on their shortlist of possible replacements for Klopp at the end of the campaign, along with the likes of Xabi Alonso, Roberto De Zerbi and Ruben Amorim.

However, the report states that Inzaghi would reject the current Premier League leaders out of hand to stay on and continue his project with Inter.

It’s claimed the former Italy striker intends to sign an extension in Milan for a combination of personal and sporting reasons, with Inter leaving their high-profile Serie A rivals behind in the dust this season.

Inzaghi’s current deal is due to expire in the summer but discussions of a possible extension are advancing at a pace, with Inter’s hierarchy keen to tie their manager for a further three years until 2027.

‘I’m happy here at Inter and I feel good with the board and with the fans,’ Inzaghi told reporters earlier this week.

‘Regarding my contract, we are going to meet after this season to discuss the extension but the relationship is really great.

‘From my point of view, talks will be good.’

Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso remains Liverpool’s number one target to take over the reins from Klopp, but it’s understood Bayern Munich have pulled ahead in the race to secure the Spaniard’s services.

Alonso’s Leverkusen hold an imperious ten-point lead over Bayern at the top of the Bundesliga table and are still unbeaten in the German top flight, 24 games into the season.

According to Sky Germany, it would require a fee of £21million to prise Alonso away from Leverkusen this summer – more than double what the 2010 World Cup winner cost Liverpool as a player.
