The University of North Carolina’s men’s basketball season came to a shocking end on Thursday night, as the Tar Heels blew a 19-point second-half lead and fell 82-78 to No. 11 seed VCU in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The loss marks the second consecutive year that Hubert Davis’ team has lost in the first round of March Madness, and it closes the 2025-26 season on a three-game losing streak.
The Tar Heels, who were led by senior Seth Trimble’s 26 points, had a commanding 56-37 lead with 14:58 left in the game. However, VCU stormed back, outscoring UNC 45-22 the rest of the way, including the five minutes of overtime. The Rams’ Terrence Hill Jr. scored 23 of his 34 points after halftime, leading the charge.
Social Media Erupts with Criticism for Hubert Davis
Tar Heel fans were left stunned and frustrated, taking to social media to vent their emotions. Many called for Hubert Davis’ head, citing the team’s disappointing performance and lack of adjustments down the stretch.
– “Fire Hubert Davis immediately,” tweeted @burnercave.
– “I’m done supporting UNC until we fire Hubert Davis,” added @RamsesTar.
– “Hubert Davis couldn’t coach a recreational league middle school team out of a paper bag. Zero adjustments, zero personality. Just stands there like a malfunctioning NPC while Carolina chokes another season. Fire this fraud already,” wrote @TarHeelMBB.
Davis faced criticism for his team’s struggles with free throws, as they missed eight shots from the line. He also drew scrutiny for his decision to go with a six-man rotation in the second half.
