Steven Gerrard asked England teammate to sign for Liverpool but he rejected move for one key reason


Steven Gerrard asked an England teammate to join him at Liverpool but the move ultimately never happened.

Bobby Zamora made his England debut back in 2010 against Hungary, coming on as a half-time substitute in the 2-1 win at Wembley.

He had earlier been poised to represent the Trinidad and Tobago national team before picking up an injury in training.

Zamora had been in the frame for the World Cup in South Africa but an achilles injury ruled him out.

But after his international bow, Gerrard, who was England vice captain at the time, tried to persuade him to join Liverpool after the game.

Roy Hodgson had took the reins at Anfield after guiding Fulham to the Europa League final in a campaign where Zamora struck 19 times in all competitions

Mark Hughes was his replacement and he had told the former Spurs and West Ham man just how important a role he had for him.

Both Liverpool and Spurs were in for the striker, who regrets not moving on.

“I should have probably gone to Liverpool from Fulham,” Zamora admitted

“Roy [Hodgson] went to Liverpool. They bid and Spurs bid at the same time, £10 million the pair of them.

“When I played for England, my first game against Hungary, I get in the lift with my best pal and Stevie G, and Stevie G goes, ‘Mate, f***ing brilliant today, well done. Would you come to Liverpool?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah’ … so he said, ‘I’ll speak to Roy’.

“I’d just had my girls. Mark Hughes was like, ‘You’re going to be my key man, I need you, we’ll give you new a deal.’ I don’t know why, but I said, ‘Yeah OK’.

“But yeah, I probably should have gone to Liverpool. Regardless of the fact Roy didn’t do great there. I should have got five years at Liverpool. You can’t hit a few branches coming down from there.”

Zamora penned a new deal in September 2010 but just a day later, he had his leg broken following a challenge from Karl Henry.

He ended up signing for QPR and scored the goal which sealed their return to the Premier League in the play-off final.

The 42-year-old would end up finishing his career with a second spell back at Brighton.
