Steven Gerrard described the “sadness” in the dressing room as Fabinho made two appearances for Liverpool.
The former Liverpool trio recently made an appearance in Saudi Arabia, with Fabinho helping to ‘break the hearts’ of Steven Gerrard’s men.
Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has shared his thoughts on the emotional state of his players following their latest draw in the Saudi Arabian Professional League.
Gerrard’s side extended their unbeaten run to four games, including three draws, with former Liverpool midfielders Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum featuring in the win against Al-Etihad at Al-Etipark.
The match attracted a lot of attention, with 12,300 supporters in attendance, a significant increase on the previous match attended by Al-Ettifaq. Wijnaldum scored his fifth goal of the season before the break. But Al Ittihad fought back in the second half and equalized through Abderrazak Hamdallah, assisted by another former Liverpool player in Fabinho.
Gerrard, who was watching the result, expressed his disappointment with the players in the dressing room. “The Villar was full of sadness on the faces of the players because of the draw,” he said. We are happy with the results. “We are closer to three points,” he said.
Gerrard has won six of his 14 league games since taking charge at Al-Ethifaq. His side are currently seventh in the Saudi Arabia Pro League table, still 15 points behind leaders Al Hilal.
And “Al-Ittihad” climbed to fourth place, surpassing “At-Taaun” on goal difference. The reunion of Wijnaldum, Henderson and Fabinho marks a significant milestone for the trio, who moved to Saudi Arabia last summer.
Although they are now in different teams, their relationship at Liverpool remains strong. As the season continues, Al-Ettifaq will be looking to build on their recent performances and get more wins. As a former Liverpool player, Gerrard’s leadership and experience will no doubt play a key role in his team’s success.
Liverpool.com says: Fabinho at least enjoys more respect from the visitors than any of his former team-mates at Al Ittihad. A draw against one of the division’s PIF-backed sides was enough to give Wijnaldum and Henderson a rare taste of a decent group again.
But it would be interesting to know what people who have traveled to Saudi Arabia actually think. They are certainly well paid and for some, that may be enough.
But for Gerrard, a string of uninspiring performances in the sweltering heat are no match for Henderson’s.
