Two people are understood to have been detained following the incident, which broke out during a huge celebratory street parade following the Kansas City Cheifs’ historic Super Bowl win
A mass shooting at the NFL Super Bowl parade in Kansas City killed one person and injured at least 15 more.
Police in the US have confirmed the shooting took place around Union Station with two “armed” people having reportedly been detained for further investigation. Officials are reportedly still working to determine the exact number of people who have been injured in the incident although the chief of Kansas City Police says there are up to 15 victims.
Local reports indicate that one person has died at the time of writing with a further 15 injured with some 800 offices on the scene, some of which “ran towards danger”. Three people are understood to be in a critical condition. Cops subsequently urged people to leave the area “as quickly and safely as possible”.

Mayor Quinton Lucas said the city hasd been “looking to have a celebration,” explaining that he, “like many others, ran and ran for safety,” witnessing first-hand emergency services administering first aid amid the chaos. He added that the incident is something, “we do not expect in Kansas City”.
Police Chief Stacey Graves spoke to reporters, explaining law enforcement were carrying out an “active investigation”, noting we now “know” that “one of the victims is deceased”. She added that “800 officers” were on the scene and “ran towards danger”. She added that she was “angry” and added: “To the people who were injured in this tragedy, our hearts go out to you and your families”.
CBS News reports that a local law enforcement source said the shooting didn’t appear to be terror-related and may have been the result of an argument that turned violent. A reporter for Fox 4 KC took to X, formerly Twitter, to say as the news broke: “1 person has died, and at least 9 people hurt in shooting in Downtown KC. KCPD have 3 people in custody.”
In a post on X, Kansas City Police said: “Shots have been fired around Union Station. Please leave the area. Shots were fired west of Union Station near the garage and multiple people were struck. We took two armed people into custody for more investigation.
“Anyone nearby needs to leave the area as quickly and safely as possible to facilitate treatment of the shooting victims. Please avoid the Union Station parking garage area to allow first responders through.”
No children are reported to have been injured. In a separate post, the force added: “Officers are working to clear Union Station itself. We will release everyone inside the building once that is complete. We are still trying to determine the number of shooting victims.
“We are releasing everyone from inside Union Station.”
Footage from the scene appears to show people pouring into a large building as people look on in horror. One voice can be heard in a clip saying “the FBI is here”.
Kansas City Chiefs, whose roster includes stars such as Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes, won the Super Bowl by defeating the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday (February 11). Huge crowds are understood to have gathered in the city to celebrate the victory in a street parade.
In a post on X, Mahomes said: “Praying for Kansas City,” followed by three praying hand emojis.
One woman told KCTV: “I was just telling everybody to get down, get down and get out the way and then the officers were coming around”.
Captain Jake Becchina, a spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department, told the Kansas City Star: “At the conclusion of the rally there were shots fired west of Union Station near the garage and several people were struck”.
