Nigeria, the three-time champions, claim that they have made “Let’s Do It Again” their rallying cry in an effort to win the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire early in the following year.
Before the final AFCON 2023 qualification game against the Falcons and True Parrots of Sao Tome and Principe in Uyo last month, a proposal was put forth and unanimously approved. This served as the reason why players and officials wore t-shirts bearing the inscription after the game at Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo. That game was won 6-0 by the Eagles.
Nigeria won the AFCON in 1980, the one she hosted, the one in 1994 in Tunisia, and the one in the 2013 finals in South Africa. The players and crew, according to team captain William Ekong, have adapted to the new motto like bees to honey.
We enjoy the term because it encourages us to go forward and gives us confidence. Since we’ve done it previously, we can do it once more. Our objective is to win the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, and we have the team to accomplish it.
“I look around and I see players who have the capacity to make it happen,” defender Kenneth Omeruo continued. All of us have high goals. The group consists of both youthful, vibrant talent and experienced, wise minds. We’re going to Cote d’Ivoire to go for the trophy.
The song will continue on Friday at the Estadio Municipal de Portimão in Portugal when the Super Eagles play a friendly match against Saudi Arabia. The majority of the team who destroyed Sao Tome and Principe will be present.
Both nations will be facing off at the highest level of international competition for the second time. The lone prior meeting took place in a friendly on May 25, 2010, at the Alpenstadion in Wattens, Austria. It was a part of the Eagles’ last-ditch preparations for the FIFA World Cup finals in South Africa. In the scoreless match, the Super Eagles were led by Nwankwo Kanu, one of only two players to have represented Nigeria in three FIFA World Cups.
By the way, the head coach of the Super Eagles now, Jose Peseiro, was the Saudi Arabian team’s coach on that day.
Prior to their November 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Lesotho and Zimbabwe, the Eagles play another friendly match at the same location on Monday against the Mambas of Mozambique.
