TERRANCE BROWN LEADS THE CHARGE AS AVDALAS ORCHESTRATES AND BRIZZI BRINGS STABILITY TO UNC’S THREE-GUARD ATTACK UNDER MICHAEL MALONE

North Carolina is embracing a different approach to its backcourt this season, with head coach Michael Malone placing considerable trust in three point guards who bring different strengths to the team’s offensive system. Terrence Brown, Derek Avdalas and Jonathan Brizzi are expected to play important roles as the Tar Heels look to establish consistency, improve their offensive execution and compete at a higher level throughout the campaign.

Malone has made it clear that UNC will not depend exclusively on one traditional floor general. Instead, the coaching staff intends to distribute ball-handling responsibilities among multiple players, creating a more flexible offense that can adapt to different opponents and game situations.

The strategy has already started taking shape. Information collected from three exhibition contests and Monday’s regular-season opener provides an early indication of how the three guards are being utilized and where each player fits into Malone’s plans.

Among the three, Brown has carried the heaviest workload in terms of tracked offensive possessions. The available tracking data credits him with approximately 12.2 offensive possessions per game, highlighting the responsibility he has assumed in initiating UNC’s offense.

That figure offers an important glimpse into Brown’s growing importance. His involvement suggests that Malone is comfortable placing the ball in his hands and allowing him to influence the tempo of the game. Whether pushing the ball in transition, initiating half-court possessions or creating opportunities for teammates, Brown has been entrusted with a significant portion of the team’s offensive responsibilities.

His role could become increasingly important as the Tar Heels continue adjusting to Malone’s expectations. A point guard who can consistently bring the ball up the floor, recognize defensive weaknesses and make decisions under pressure gives the entire offense a stronger foundation.

However, Brown is not expected to shoulder those responsibilities alone.

Avdalas provides another dimension to UNC’s backcourt. His role as an orchestrator gives the Tar Heels another player capable of organizing possessions, connecting teammates and helping the offense maintain its rhythm.

Having another reliable ball handler is particularly valuable in a system that encourages multiple players to participate in creating opportunities. Defenses can become uncomfortable when they cannot concentrate their attention on a single playmaker. With Avdalas available to take control of possessions, UNC has another option when opponents attempt to pressure Brown or disrupt the team’s offensive flow.

His presence also gives Malone additional flexibility when making substitutions and adjusting his lineups. Rather than completely changing the offensive structure whenever Brown leaves the floor, the coaching staff can maintain a level of organization through another capable facilitator.

Brizzi, meanwhile, offers a different kind of contribution. His importance to the rotation comes through the stability he can provide when the Tar Heels need dependable decision-making and composure.

Every successful backcourt needs players who understand when to accelerate the game and when to slow things down. While scoring and playmaking naturally attract attention, controlling possessions, limiting unnecessary mistakes and making sensible decisions are equally important.

Brizzi’s role gives UNC another option in maintaining offensive balance. His involvement also reinforces Malone’s broader philosophy of building a team where multiple players can handle responsibility instead of relying heavily on one individual.

The three-guard approach could prove especially valuable against opponents that employ aggressive defensive pressure. When one ball handler encounters difficulties, another can step forward and help relieve the pressure. It also creates opportunities for different offensive combinations, allowing Malone to experiment with lineups depending on the matchup.

Nevertheless, distributing responsibilities among three point guards does not automatically guarantee offensive success. The Tar Heels must develop chemistry, understand their individual responsibilities and avoid unnecessary turnovers.

Brown’s workload will naturally attract attention because of the number of possessions he handles. However, his effectiveness will also depend on how successfully Avdalas and Brizzi complement his contributions.

For Malone, the objective is not simply to divide minutes equally. It is to identify the combinations that give UNC the best opportunity to execute its offense while maintaining control of the game.

The early tracking information from the exhibitions and season opener provides a useful starting point, although a larger sample of regular-season performances will be necessary before drawing definitive conclusions about the rotation.

There will also be difficult tests ahead. As opponents become more familiar with UNC’s personnel, defensive adjustments will challenge the three guards to demonstrate their ability to make quick decisions and create advantages.

Brown will need to continue handling his offensive responsibilities efficiently, while Avdalas must help maintain the team’s rhythm and Brizzi will have opportunities to demonstrate the value of his composure.

Ultimately, Malone’s decision to utilize multiple point guards reflects his desire to build a versatile and unpredictable offensive unit. Instead of allowing the entire offense to depend on one player, UNC has three different options capable of contributing to its backcourt operation.

The early evidence suggests that Brown currently carries the largest tracked offensive workload, but Avdalas and Brizzi remain important pieces of the overall strategy.

If all three establish a productive understanding of their responsibilities, North Carolina could develop one of its most flexible backcourt rotations under Malone.

The challenge now is turning that individual versatility into consistent team production as the Tar Heels navigate the demands of the regular season.
