A number of Liverpool players turned out for the national team yesterday and it was a productive day for the Reds’ stars.
Darwin Nunez scored to end Argentina’s winning streak and Luis Diaz scored both of Colombia’s goals against Alisson Becker’s Brazil.
It wasn’t a good time for Alexis McAllister, who was on the other side of Nunes’ attack. Elsewhere, however, Diogo Jota netted for Portugal, while Mohamed Salah scored an impressive four goals for Egypt against Djibouti.
The final red was Dominik Szoboslai for Hungary’s 2-2 draw against Bulgaria. The score helped Hungary win the group stage – Liverpool’s eighth assist – and qualify for Euro 2024.
And Bulgaria coach Ilian Iliev praised Szoboszlai after the match, via Hungary’s Nemzeti Sports.”He is a world-class player and he showed his skills in this match,” enthused Iliev.
“I think we can show our strength in the next game. I told the players after the game that their fighting ability should be praised and we have to continue to do the same against Serbia.
“There are very few players who play football with the skills that Szoboslay has,” he said.
Szoboslai shines again
Szoboslai wasn’t the standout performer for Liverpool last night, but he still impressed. And it will still be a proud night for him as captain of his country. But in the last few games we haven’t seen Soboslay involved.
Dominic Szoboslai and assists aren’t the only thing he brings here. Hungarian games these days don’t seem to leave their mark.
I hope last night’s silence ends as a momentous moment for him personally and for his country. It is not the first time Sobosleigh has been rated as “world class” in the past month.
Liverpool team-mate Harvey Elliott also gave him an important explanation recently. So far, the former RB Leipzig man has lived up to the praise heaped upon him.
But as hopes rise, we may see him take another step forward. Yesterday was a good sign that he can do that. Well done, Dom.
