Neil Mellor pointed to Virgil van Dijk’s impressive defensive performances and Darwin Nunez’s attacking impact as key factors in Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Brentford on Sunday.
In the post-match review show, currently available on LFCTV GO, Mellor looked back at United’s nine consecutive wins at Anfield in all competitions this season.
“The captain was absolutely brilliant,” the former Liverpool forward said of Van Dijk’s performance.“Virgil made some great saves and his commitment to keeping clean sheets was incredible.
“Virgil dominated his penalty area and topped the game’s statistics in every category, including aerial duels, tackles, clearances and accurate passing. “The captain was great.
“Mellor also praised the contributions of Nunez and Kostas Tsimikas, who had one and two assists respectively in the win, with Mohamed Salah (two) and Diogo Jota scoring. “Darwin Nunes has an assist, two shutouts and more field goals than anyone else.
He’s made a huge contribution,” he added.”The centre-forward played well and has a good relationship with Mo Salah.
Darwin received a well-deserved hug from his coach after the game.“I would also like to give a special mention to Kostas Tsimika, who performed very well and responded well during the week.
“I’m very happy for Kostas. He had two assists and gave us a lot of space and good energy on the left wing.”
