Two prominent Italian football clubs, Inter Milan and Juventus, are considering a free transfer for Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara when his Liverpool contract expires in the summer of 2024.
Thiago Alcantara has been outstanding on the pitch since joining Liverpool in 2020. However, injuries have limited his playing time and also had an impact on Jurgen Klopp’s side.
There have been no talks about a contract extension as Klopp assesses the Spain international, and Liverpool have a history of parting ways with older players, as evidenced by the 2023 summer transfer window. Thiago is 32 years old and despite constant injuries he is still a top player capable of performing well.
The midfielder has also taken on a mentoring role for younger players as the Reds undergo a midfield overhaul. Milan “Inter” and “Juventus” want to buy Thiago
With no new contract imminent, Inter Milan and Juventus have shown interest in Thiago as a potential free agent in 2024, according to Italy’s Calciomercato.
Landing his services would be a big move for both clubs. That’s because Serie A offers a slower pace and a less physically demanding environment than the Premier League, allowing Thiago to extend his career and expand his trophy collection.
If Liverpool let Thiago go, Wataru Endo would be the most experienced midfielder.
Endo is a leader and a positive influence, while Thiago stands out due to his experience at top clubs such as Barcelona and Bayern Munich. He also understands the importance of wearing a Liverpool shirt, making him a valuable asset both on and off the pitch.
Keeping Thiago could benefit the development of young talents such as Ryan Gravenburch, Stefan Bajcetic, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Dominic Szoboslai and Alexis McAllister.
There is a strong case for Liverpool to extend Thiago’s contract, even if it means reducing his playing time.
His influence remains vital to Liverpool’s rebuilding efforts and Jurgen Klopp will be hoping he can prevent him from signing another veteran on a free transfer.
