As the Duke Blue Devils continue to prepare for the 2026-27 college basketball season, head coach Jon Scheyer and his staff are hard at work on recruiting. There are virtually no days off in terms of recruiting as the future of the program is in those recruiting classes.
For the Blue Devils, they have two players committed in the 2027 class, and while it’s projected to be a smaller one, it will be talented. Kager Knueppel was the first player to commit and he really ascended over the Summer, closing in on five-star status.
Recently, Duke landed a commitment from Australian product Luke Paul, a point guard who could be very sneaky good. But is Duke close to adding another talented prospect? All signs are pointing towards that.
On Thursday, it was reported by Joe Tipton that five-star small forward Asa Montgomery has cancelled upcoming visits to Louisville and Arizona. That’s a great sign for the Blue Devils especially since it comes just a few weeks after he visited Duke.
With Montgomery on campus, the Blue Devils reportedly made a good impression on the recruit for his visit. It was good enough that Duke had picked up two Crystal Ball predictions for Montgomery on 247Sports.
By cancelling these visits, it hints that Montgomery has made up his mind and a decision date could be coming soon enough. In addition to Duke, Montgomery has also visited LSU, UConn, North Carolina, and Georgia Tech in his recruitment. He has a total of 28 offers but has visited just the five programs, showing that they are his finalists.
With the early signing period opening up next month, Montgomery is likely to announce then. There’s the obvious momentum favoring Duke, so seeing Montgomery commit elsewhere would mean something has gone wrong between now and the open signing period.
The 6-foot-7, 215-pound Montgomery hails from Georgia and is ranked No. 8 nationally, the No. 3 small forward and the No. 2 player in the state of Georgia per the 247Sports recruiting composite rankings. He would be a huge get for the Blue Devils, giving them three prospects in the 2027 class. Duke could probably add one more recruit on their board before wrapping up that 2027 class.
This is certainly a recruitment to continue to monitor moving forward, especially when the consensus is that there is a strong Duke lean here.
