Trent Alexander-Arnold can’t fix Liverpool worry as Darwin Núñez and Pep Guardiola feud explained


Liverpool certainly didn’t make it easy for itself. But in the end, it managed to get an important week off to the best possible start in dramatic circumstances.

A late 4-3 win over Fulham means the Reds are now Arsenal’s closest challengers at the top of the Premier League table. With the games coming thick and fast as the festive period begins, Jürgen Klopp’s side needs to make sure it remains right in the hunt amid what could be a fascinating title race.

It was made all the more intriguing when Manchester City dropped points again at home to Tottenham. Pep Guardiola and his side, though, were left fuming after yet more refereeing controversy at the end of the encounter.

Liverpool certainly won’t mind that, particularly after being on the wrong end of plenty of decisions this season. The focus now is on ensuring the Reds stay in the pack, especially with a game against Mikel Arteta’s side to come just before Christmas.

Amid all the drama though, there was a major concern for Liverpool. Joël Matip was forced off injured during the second half, and Jürgen Klopp’s face said it all as the Reds embark on a congested festive schedule. “Then it goes to the last bit of play, the ball is crossed into the middle and Lucho Díaz wants to head it and they save it. So then Darwin tells him (Guardiola), ‘Ah, now you are the ones who are lucky’. From there, everything went to s**t. But it was very calm. Nothing serious.”
