Trent Alexander-Arnold explains new Liverpool role and what Jürgen Klopp told him about position

Liverpool vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold says that he has been told by Jürgen Klopp to play a slightly different role. He impressed against Fulham today.

Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold has explained that Jürgen Klopp is keen for him to move inside as much as possible where he can get on the ball in the center of the field from right-back.

The inverted ploy is something that Liverpool has done for some time now but Alexander-Arnold performed it noticeably differently against Fulham at Craven Cottage. As he moved into the quarterback position, Jarell Quansah would swap places with him and be positioned very wide on the right and Alexander-Arnold was almost exclusively in the middle.

Despite the fact that there is much more space in wide areas at times, Liverpool feels that the best version of Alexander-Arnold can be unleashed centrally almost at all times. And he did create plenty of chances for those in front of him with searching long passes.

“I think the more and more I’m playing in the middle of the pitch, the tighter and more compact I’m finding it,” Alexander-Arnold said live on Sky Sports post-match. “The manager has told me to get into that position to try to get on the ball and find those passes over the top.”

“There has to be discipline in there,” he continued. “The rest of the team have to go and do that; move around. Within that, there’s freedom and space to go in there. At this point of the season, we’ve got nothing to lose. We need to chase the goal difference. It’s positive, it’s a big thing and it is a tough position for us.”

Alexander-Arnold’s passing was not the only thing that stood out against Fulham, either. In the first half, he netted a superb free-kick that sailed into the top corner not long after a tame Harvey Elliott effort had hit the wall.

“It felt good and it looked good, from what I saw — the lads told me it was very good!” he told Match of the Day. “You can tell from their smiles and how excited they are that it was a good finish. It was exciting to score again.

“The technique I use, it generates the power itself. I just try to guide it and make it hard for the goalkeeper. You get one chance in a game to execute it for the team. Practice, practice, practice and it pays off on days like today.

“It’s been a tough couple of months for me — not being able to play and do what I love — so it’s an amazing feeling to be back out there. I’m enjoying my football and feeling like I’m playing well, as well. It’s good to play football, man. It’s the best thing to do.”

It is absolutely massive for the Reds to have Alexander-Arnold back playing again. The full-back (or central midfielder) made a real impact on the game and while he isn’t yet at the level to be able to manage the full 90 minutes after coming back from injury, he will be desperate to start against Everton midweek. Another goal like that at Goodison Park wouldn’t go amiss.
