Liverpool are currently battling Bayern Munich to appoint Xabi Alonso as their new manager, and the Spaniard could look to bring Jeremie Frimpong to Anfield with him.
Trent Alexander-Arnold could get his dream of shining in Liverpool’s midfield next season if the club manages to bring Xabi Alonso on board.
The Reds are currently in a tug-of-war with Bayern Munich to secure the services of the Spanish coach, who is still aiming for a triple win this season with Bayer Leverkusen. His team is currently leading the Bundesliga by 10 points and is still competing in the DFB-Pokal and Europa League.
The odds of the 42-year-old returning to Merseyside seem to have increased after reports suggest Bayern has shifted their focus to Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi. BILD reports that the club has reached out to the Italian with plans for him to take over from Thomas Tuchel in the summer.
Leverkusen are still fighting to keep Alonso, but if he does join Liverpool, he might bring some of his current stars with him. Dutch right-back Jeremie Frimpong, who has been a standout player for the league leaders in the 2023/24 season, is likely to be at the top of the list.
He’s played in 33 matches in all competitions, scoring 11 goals and assisting 11 times. One of those goals was in the crucial 3-0 victory over Bayern in February, which put a clear gap between the two clubs in the league table, reports the Express.
Frimpong moved to Leverkusen from Celtic in 2021, but the next year his agents reportedly had a chat with Manchester United. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano said that the Red Devils were told that the two-cap international was keen on a move because he wanted to play in the Premier League.
Even though he’s signed with Leverkusen until 2028, Alonso moving to England could now decide Frimpong’s future. And it might let Liverpool use Alexander-Arnold in a central midfield role.
After getting stick for his defensive positioning, the 25 year old shone in the middle of the pitch in his team’s 6-1 victory at Leeds last season. This led to him being used in his new position by Gareth Southgate, impressing last June in Euro 2024 qualifying wins over North Macedonia and Malta.
Liverpool’s injury problems this season have stopped Jurgen Klopp from trying out Alexander-Arnold more. However, he’s still shown bits of his attacking skill, scoring a crucial late equaliser against Manchester City in November and the winner against Fulham the next month.
Chatting to Four Four Two this month, the academy product said: “For England, I’d say I’m now a midfielder and that’s something that really excites me. It gives me the opportunity to get into the team. I think if it’s working, then long term I don’t see a reason to change that.”
The addition of Alonso and Frimpong at Liverpool could also mean more chances for him to show his skills in the midfield.
