Two main options to replace LeBron James in Lakers Starting Five

The Los Angeles Lakers are set to kick off the 2025-26 NBA season without their superstar LeBron James, who is currently sidelined with sciatica, a nerve injury that requires three to four weeks of recovery time. This significant absence will undoubtedly impact the team’s dynamics and performance on the court. With James out, the Lakers’ starting lineup is expected to undergo some changes. According to The Athletic’s Dan Woike, either Jake LaRavia or Jarred Vanderbilt will likely fill James’ spot in the starting five, joining Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, and Deandre Ayton.

LaRavia, a 23-year-old wing player, offers multi-dimensional skills, which could enhance the team’s overall performance. He can make a difference in various ways, potentially playing better off the bench. Vanderbilt, on the other hand, is the Lakers’ established defensive ace, providing a strong point of attack. Both players have the potential to make an impact, but it’s unclear who will ultimately get the nod.

The projected starting lineup for the Lakers would feature Luka Doncic at point guard, Austin Reaves at shooting guard, either Jake LaRavia or Jarred Vanderbilt at small forward, Rui Hachimura at power forward, and Deandre Ayton at center. This lineup would provide a good balance of scoring, rebounding, and defense.

LaRavia joined the Lakers on a two-year, $12 million deal this past offseason. He became a new 3-and-D wing following Dorian Finney-Smith’s exit. Vanderbilt, meanwhile, remains a key player for the Lakers, averaging 4.1 points and 5.1 rebounds over 36 games (two starts) last season.

The Lakers’ new season promises to be an exciting and challenging ride, with James’ absence presenting opportunities for other players to step up and make their mark. As the team navigates this period, their depth, strategy, and teamwork will be put to the test.

The question on everyone’s mind is: will LaRavia or Vanderbilt make the most of this opportunity? Can they help the Lakers maintain their competitive edge despite James’ absence? Only time will tell. One thing is certain, however – the Lakers will face a tough road ahead, and their resilience will be put to the test.

As the team prepares for the upcoming season, fans are eagerly anticipating the opportunity to see their favorite players in action. Will the Lakers’ new lineup be enough to secure a winning record, or will they struggle to find their footing without James? The uncertainty is palpable, but one thing is clear: the Lakers will be an interesting team to watch in the 2025-26 season.
