Tyler Morton is back in the Championship this season playing for Hully City. Things are going well, too – the 21-year-old is playing regularly and putting up some impressive stats.
In fact, Morton is completing a staggering 90 per cent of his passes. Throw in the tackles and key passes he averages and things look very promising for the young midfielder. But, naturally, Morton’s end-goal is the Liverpool first-team and he still dreams of making it. It became a much tougher task this summer, however, as the Reds brought in a selection of new, young midfielders.
Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch will be around for a long time to come, should all go to plan. It’s a different landscape for a player like Morton, who previously hoped to be the successor for Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, and James Milner.
So what does Morton think? He talked to the Liverpool Echo this week, explaining that as a Red, he’s thrilled that the club have such talent in midfield. “They’re fantastic footballers, aren’t they?” said Morton. “You can see that their game is evolving because of how young they are and how experienced they are.
“It pushes me even harder and makes me want it that little bit more. I’m really happy, I’m happy that Liverpool have got that team because I’m a Liverpool supporter as well. They’re a fantastic team and I’m excited to get back there.”
Morton doesn’t sound particularly put-off, then. He’s still only 21, after all, and could break into the setup if he can just get a decent chance to do so. Jurgen Klopp is proving yet again this season that he will hand out those chances to young players who earn them. Jarell Quansah is a shining example of that.
Morton will hope he’s able to impress in the summer, then, and get more chances of his own. His current form suggests he might do just that.
