It’s been nearly 4 1/2 months since Michael Malone was officially introduced as the head coach of the UNC men’s basketball program, and the buzz around Chapel Hill hasn’t slowed down since.
The former NBA championship-winning coach took over a Tar Heels team in transition, and he’s spent the offseason reshaping the roster, the culture, and the expectations that come with wearing Carolina blue.
In just two months, Malone and his new-look Tar Heels will get their first public test when they face Indiana in a preseason exhibition game in Indianapolis. It will be the first chance for fans to see what this revamped UNC squad looks like under Malone’s leadership — new players, new schemes, and a new voice on the sideline.
Speaking with college basketball reporter Jon Rothstein, Malone reflected on his first few months in Chapel Hill. When asked to sum up the experience so far, he didn’t hesitate.
“Chaos,” Malone said with a laugh. “But the good kind of chaos. It’s been nonstop — meetings, recruiting, getting to know the guys, learning the tradition here. There’s a standard at UNC, and we’re working every day to live up to it.”
Malone added that while the transition from the NBA to college has been an adjustment, the energy around the program has made it worth it. He praised the staff, the returning players, and the fan base for embracing the change so quickly.
With the exhibition against Indiana looming in November and the regular season right behind it, Malone and the Tar Heels are now shifting from building mode to game-prep mode. For a program that expects to compete for ACC titles and deep NCAA Tournament runs every year, the countdown to tipoff is officially on.
