The North Carolina Tar Heels are in the midst of their head coach search, and while things have been quiet, there’s been some major coaching news. Assistant coach Marcus Paige is leaving the program to join Wes Miller’s staff at Charlotte, according to On3. This is Miller’s first big hire since being fired by Cincinnati just a few weeks ago.
Paige, a former Tar Heel standout, spent four seasons at UNC before playing pro basketball overseas. He then joined Hubert Davis’ staff and quickly became a favorite among players, earning recognition as a rising coaching candidate. At Charlotte, Paige is expected to take on a bigger role, gaining valuable experience and climbing the coaching ranks. He’s considered to be on a fast track to becoming a head coach in the future.
Paige’s departure comes as UNC searches for a new head coach, with candidates like Billy Donovan being mentioned. With Paige’s new role, he’s likely to bring a fresh perspective to Charlotte’s program, which is looking to bounce back from a 17-17 season.
