Carolina fans appreciate players who combine production with passion, energy and a willingness to embrace the spotlight.
Malone has made it clear that UNC will not be taking a passive approach to its first full recruiting cycle under his leadership. The Tar Heels have repeatedly targeted players near the very top of the 2027 rankings, attempting to build relationships with the type of prospects capable of immediately elevating the program.
Offering Uvwo represents another significant swing.
North Carolina will face fierce competition from many of college basketball’s biggest programs, with schools such as Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Alabama, Arkansas and Baylor already involved in his recruitment.

Michael Malone’s pursuit of the best prospects in the 2027 recruiting class continued over the weekend, with North Carolina extending a scholarship offer to five-star center Lewis Uvwo.
Uvwo revealed the offer on his Instagram story, posting the UNC logo and adding the Tar Heels to an already extensive list of programs pursuing him. The Prolific Prep standout has accumulated more than two dozen offers as his recruitment and national profile have exploded. Regardless of which major recruiting service you prefer, one thing remains consistent: Uvwo is viewed as the top center in the 2027 class.
The 247Sports rankings list the 6-foot-10, 225-pound big man as the No. 6 overall player and No. 1 center nationally. He also holds the No. 1 positional ranking in the 247Sports Composite. ESPN ranks Uvwo seventh overall and first among centers, while Rivals also identifies him as the top player at his position and eighth overall.
Uvwo’s rise has been fueled by his potentially game-changing impact around the basket. His length, physicality and explosiveness give him the tools to control the paint defensively, both as a shot blocker and a deterrent. He possesses a reported 7-foot-7 wingspan and demonstrated his ability to influence both ends of the floor during a breakout Peach Jam performance for Nightrydas Elite (the same AAU team Caleb Wilson played for).
There is still room for Uvwo to develop his offensive skill set, but his ability to run the floor, finish above the rim and overwhelm opponents physically gives him an exceptionally high ceiling. Those traits have helped turn him into one of the fastest-rising and most coveted players in high school basketball.
