UNC Completes Weekend Sweep Behind Small Ball and Pitching.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — North Carolina Tar Heels baseball sent both the moms and seniors home happy Sunday afternoon, completing a three-game sweep of Pittsburgh Panthers baseball with a 7-3 victory at Boshamer Stadium. The win marked North Carolina’s first ACC home series sweep of the season and improved the Tar Heels to 40-9-1 overall and 20-7 in conference play.

Made-To-Order Offense.

On Friday, it was the long ball. On Saturday, it was a complete all-around performance. On Sunday, it was small ball. Scott Forbes’ squad manufactured offense throughout the series finale, laying down a season-high four sacrifice bunts, drawing seven walks and consistently pressuring Pittsburgh Panthers baseball on the basepaths. Rather than relying on home runs or extra-base hits, the North Carolina Tar Heels baseball pieced together productive at-bats, timely singles and situational execution to build their 7-3 victory. Every one of UNC’s seven runs came without an extra-base hit, highlighting the Tar Heels’ ability to win in different ways while completing the weekend sweep at Boshamer Stadium.

After piling up eight extra-base hits across the first two games of the series, Gavin Gallaher’s first-inning double into the right-center gap represented the lone extra-base knock for the North Carolina Tar Heels baseball on Sunday afternoon. The Tar Heels responded by fully embracing a manufacturing style of offense, stringing together quality at-bats and forcing Pittsburgh Panthers baseball to consistently defend pressure situations.

UNC repeatedly moved runners into scoring position with sacrifice bunts, productive groundouts and situational hitting, finishing with a season-high four sacrifice bunts in the finale. Four of Carolina’s seven runs came after runners were advanced via bunts, highlighting the club’s discipline and execution throughout the lineup. Rather than waiting for another power surge after Friday’s seven-home run outburst, the Diamond Heels showcased a different offensive identity — one built on patience, baserunning pressure and timely contact.

The approach kept Pittsburgh’s pitching staff under constant stress all afternoon at Boshamer Stadium, allowing UNC to steadily build separation while completing its first ACC home series sweep of the season.

UNC’s Old and New Arms Deliver the Same Formula.

Folger Boaz got the ball Sunday for the first time since April 19 against Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets baseball, and the junior made the most of what could have been his final regular-season start at Boshamer Stadium. Boaz turned in one of his sharpest outings of the season, attacking the strike zone early and consistently keeping Pittsburgh Panthers baseball hitters off balance with a mix of command and swing-and-miss stuff.

The right-hander finished with a season-high eight strikeouts, falling just one shy of matching the career high he established against Princeton Tigers baseball in only his third appearance as a Tar Heel back in March 2024. Boaz worked with confidence throughout the afternoon, giving the North Carolina Tar Heels baseball valuable length while continuing a strong weekend trend from the pitching staff. Even when Pittsburgh managed to put runners aboard, Boaz repeatedly delivered key outs to prevent any major momentum swing and help UNC secure the sweep.

Old Arms, New Arms, Same Tricks

Caden Glauber followed up Friday night’s dominant outing with another solid performance, allowing one hit across 3.1 innings of relief. The freshman, however, battled command issues, issuing a season-high five walks.

With the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the eighth with a 6-2 lead, Walker McDuffie, making his third consecutive appearance, delivered the game’s biggest pitch, fanning Pittsburgh catcher Sebastian Pisacreta with a full-count slider to all but clinch the Senior Day sweep for the Tar Heels.

The Diamond Heels will make a trip to the beach for their second midweek matchup with UNC Wilmington on Tuesday. First pitch from Brooks Field is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday.
