MEMPHIS, TN — Paul Osaruyi became the first high school prospect offered by Michael Malone after taking over at the North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball. The rising senior at Bella Vista Prep in Arizona received the Tar Heels’ offer just over a month ago, immediately signaling UNC’s strong interest in the talented forward.
The North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball entered the race for Osaruyi at a time when his recruitment was already gaining major traction nationally. Several powerhouse programs had established relationships with the talented forward well before the Tar Heels extended their offer, making the competition for his commitment increasingly intense.
Osaruyi’s rise has coincided with Bella Vista Prep’s emergence as one of the premier high school basketball programs in the country. The Arizona-based school captured the Chipotle National Championship last month and featured a roster loaded with Division I talent and future high-major prospects. Practicing and competing alongside elite players on a daily basis has helped sharpen Osaruyi’s game while also increasing his exposure to college coaches from across the nation.
The recruiting process has also become more personal because several of Osaruyi’s teammates have actively tried to influence his decision. Players already committed to major programs have reportedly spent time encouraging him to join them at the next level, adding another layer to an already competitive recruitment battle.
Despite entering the mix later than some schools, UNC has quickly worked to establish a meaningful connection with Osaruyi. The Tar Heels’ early priority under head coach Michael Malone shows how highly the staff values his long-term potential, versatility, and physical upside. A potential visit to Chapel Hill could give UNC an important opportunity to strengthen its position moving forward.
