There are some interesting things to look at for North Carolina’s basketball squad next year, perhaps things that people aren’t even really discussing. While the obvious thing is that head coach Michael Malone is going to be looked at under a different light because of all the pressure that he’ll have on all fronts, it’s also important to recognize that there could be some players who have to take a different role and approach than we are used to seeing from them in prior stops in their college careers.
That’s why one writer brought up the fact that guys like Terrence Brown, Matt Able, and Neoklis Avdalas having different roles could be something that eventually has to be figured out.
Obviously, North Carolina could look for two or three of those guys to come in and do what’s needed on both ends of the floor and run everything, but the scoring distribution is going to change. Somebody has to lead the team in touches and scoring, so it’ll be interesting to see if Malone can calm that down and have everybody on the same page.
“Terrence Brown comes from Utah, where he averaged nearly 20 points per game last season. Recent addition and likely starting center Cameron Fens averaged 14.4 points at South Dakota, and Neoklis Avdalas averaged 12.1 points at Virginia Tech. Several transfers on this Tar Heels roster came from schools where they carried a significant offensive workload, but their overall efficiency varied throughout the season. “With Malone now assembling these players before his first season as head coach, how he distributes offensive opportunities can have a major impact on the Tar Heels’ ceiling,” Kade Nix wrote.
The ideal part is that none of those guys seem too worried about just putting up points.
The even more promising part is that if North Carolina calls on any of them to score in bunches, they’ve all proven that they have a chance to do so. I really like what I’ve seen out of Brown and Able throughout their young careers, so I have a feeling that one of them will be the guy who is asked to score in bunches.
