Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk is currently the most dominant player in the Premier League.
By his own admission, Virgil van Dijk had a down season last season. But maybe that’s not so surprising.
The Dutchman was arrested in October 2020 after suffering a serious knee injury. They ruled him out for almost a year and Van Dijk hasn’t looked the same since his return.
Of course, he’s still an elite player, but he’s not as tall as he used to be. So while Liverpool as a whole struggled in 2022/23, Van Dijk looked a little lacking. Again, we say his perfect debut, when he was the best defender in the Premier League and arguably the best defender in the world, was “too short”.
At that peak, he surpassed all his attackers. Bigger, faster, stronger. Win in the air, on deck and from behind. All.
However, the statistics suggest that Van Dijk can reach this level again. Squawka’s figures suggest he is also leading the Premier League in terms of tackles.
Virgil van Dijk has a better win percentage than any other player with 50 Premier League wins this season. The Liverpool captain won 80% of his matches. This is an unrealistic ratio. For context, sophomore Levi Colville received “only” 72.7%.
In reality, the ranking difference is less than 2%, let alone 7%.Moreover, Van Dijk has classic skills. The thing is, no one passed him. Of course, since he signed, it was almost to be expected. But overall it shows that Liverpool’s captain has the level of dominance you’d expect. This is definitely something the Reds can do to build their next great team.
In fact, the only thing missing is a defensive midfielder in Van Dijk. If Liverpool bring him back, we could very well see them return to defensive form in 2019/20.
