And after lifting the trophy he took it home to show his children before returning it to Liverpool’s training ground, revealing: “I wanted to show my kids in person, close up. I put it on the kitchen counter when I came home and left it there.

He told The Mirror: “I’ve got four kids and they were so happy to see it and then I took it back to training the next day so everyone could take a picture with it at the AXA [Training Centre] as they have all played their part in the success we have had and they deserve to be holding the trophy.”

Van Dijk also offered some advice for Liverpool’s youngsters, who helped beat Chelsea before starring against Southampton on Wednesday night. He added: “In my career I’ve seen players who make their debuts after coming through the ranks and then disappear. His role in the group is unclear but football agent Rob Jansen insists the ex-Liverpool star will link up with Dennis Bergkamp, Henrik Larsson and Ronald Koeman. League One and League Two clubs are being considered.

Jansen told the KieftJansenEgmondGijp podcast: “The plan is to manage the football club in the broadest sense of the word. So, the way we think it should be. Training, hospitality, merchandising, marketing, everything. We have a group, and maybe one or two more will join.

“The names I mention will also do a certain job within the club. Henrik Larsson would like to become a head coach. Bergkamp will set up the academy. And Koeman also comes over to do his things.”

Beerschot is currently top of the Belgian second tier. That’s a real comeback for Kuyt on a personal level, having been sacked by Dutch side ADO Den Haag last season.
