Warriors Coach Steve Kerr Announces Jimmy Butler’s Status for Lakers Game

The Golden State Warriors are aiming for a deep playoff run in 2025–26 but face concerns over the aging core and lack of reliable depth. However, with superstars Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler leading the way, the team still views itself as a contender. Butler will be entering his first full season with the Warriors after arriving in February from the Miami Heat. The 36-year-old forward immediately fit right in, with the group going 23–7 in his 30 games played during the regular season. Butler averaged 32.7 minutes per game and scored 17.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.9 assists and 1.7 steals while operating as Golden State’s secondary playmaker behind Curry.

As the Warriors ramp up for the NBA regular season, Butler has participated in the team’s first two preseason games. He logged 17 minutes on Wednesday against the Portland Trail Blazers, scoring 12 points, two rebounds and three assists as he builds up his workload for the upcoming season.

However, on Friday during practice, Warriors coach Steve Kerr spoke to reporters and announced that Butler would miss the team’s third preseason game on Sunday against the Los Angeles Lakers. Kerr did note that the reason was likely positive and his absence had been excused.

“Jimmy Butler practiced Friday but will miss Warriors–Lakers on Sunday in LA. Excused absence. Steve Kerr says the reason is positive,” wrote Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area.

Butler has played for four teams prior to joining Golden State: the Chicago Bulls, Minnesota Timberwolves, Philadelphia 76ers and the Miami Heat. He signed a two-year, $121 million contract with the Warriors after last year’s midseason trade, which includes a player option for the 2026–27 season. Over his 14-year career, Butler has earned six All-Star selections, five All-NBA honors and five All-Defensive team nods. He has consistently elevated his play in the postseason, most notably leading the Heat to the NBA Finals in 2023 and earning Eastern Conference Finals MVP honors.

His brief absence from Sunday’s preseason game likely will not impact his availability for the regular season, as he still practiced on Friday and the team remains confident in his conditioning. With Curry anchoring the offense and Draymond Green directing the defense, Butler’s presence adds another layer of experience and toughness to a roster looking to stay competitive in a loaded Western Conference.
