What Cameron Fens’ eligibility ruling means for UNC basketball

The UNC men’s basketball program just lost a key piece of its 2026-27 roster on Wednesday, with South Dakota transfer center Cameron Fens ruled ineligible by the Tennessee Court of Appeals.

This ruling is becoming increasingly common, affecting other notable players like former Tar Heel Seth Trimble. Players recently earned fifth years of eligibility, thanks to a separate decision, part of an increasingly unpredictable collegiate landscape. With Fens now temporarily out of the picture, how will North Carolina proceed for its upcoming season? Three answers: Sayon Keita, Alexandros Samodurov and Cade Bennerman.

UNC head coach Michael Malone is known for developing international talent, headlined by his work with 3-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic. The Tar Heels had a glaring hole at center for 2026-27 until they landed Keita, a Malian center from FC Barcelona. Malone didn’t stop there, landing Greek big man Samodurov from European powerhouse Panathinaikos.

Bennerman is a wild card. He stands at 7 feet tall, but lacks any collegiate playing experience after redshirting his 2025-26 freshman campaign at Northwestern. At Father Ryan High School in Nashville (Tenn.), Bennerman averaged 13.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game.

Despite North Carolina’s lack of collegiate experience at center, the good news is there’s a great path for each offseason addition to be “the guy.” During UNC’s 2024-25 campaign, former head coach Hubert Davis rotated between Jalen Washington and Ven-Allen Lubin at the 5-spot, landing on Lubin en route to an NCAA Tournament berth. There’s right to be concerned about Fens’ recent ruling, but the Tar Heels will be just fine. It’ll be exciting to watch and see how Malone rotates his three centers throughout his first year in charge.
