Premier League vote: Newcastle United were one of seven clubs to block proposals to ban player loans to sister clubs.A vote to ban loan deals between Premier League clubs failed on Tuesday.
Thirteen clubs voted in favor of the ban, but at least 14 were needed to pass it. As a result, Newcastle United were given permission to enter into loan deals with four Saudi Arabian Professional League clubs (Al Hilal, Al Nasr, Al Ittihad and Al Ahly) owned by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund.
The Magpies can choose not to do business with these clubs, but the clubs can restrict them through sanctions.
As expected, Newcastle voted against introducing the rule. Like six other Premier League teams.
According to The Times, Big Six clubs Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal all voted in favor of the ban, while Manchester City and Chelsea voted against.
Everton, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United also voted against the ban.
Some anti-ban clubs are said to be “furious” that Saudi-owned Sheffield United have adopted Newcastle’s stance against the ban.
The rest of the Premier League clubs – Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Brentford, Brighton & Hove Albion, Burnley, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Luton Town and West Ham United – are believed to have voted in favor of the ban.
Most Premier League clubs have ownership links with other clubs around the world, but none other than the PIF can boast the strength of players represented in the Saudi Arabian Professional League.
The only Premier League clubs without any players on loan or on loan are Brentford, Burnley, Fulham, Liverpool, Luton and Spurs.
