He is one of the most wanted managers in world football, but Xabi Alonso has reportedly chosen what team he will join if he decides to leave Bayer Leverkusen.
Xabi Alonso will choose Bayern Munich over Liverpool if he decides to leave Bayer Leverkusen, according to reports in Germany.
The Merseysiders have seemingly identified their former midfielder as the No.1 choice to replace Jurgen Klopp in the summer. Alonso, 42, is yet to confirm whether he will leave Leverkusen, who are currently on course to win their first ever Bundesliga title.
At present, the Champions League and World Cup winner is laser focussed on ending the Bavarian’s domestic dominance. However, German sources understand he would prefer to join Bayern if he departs the Bay Arena at the end of the campaign.
Sky Germany said Bayern are currently “optimistic” about swaying the former midfielder over to the Allianz Arena, but they are yet to enter into any negotiations. They also confirmed Alonso would likely choose Bayern over Liverpool if he departs Leverkusen.
Bayern honorary president Uli Hoeness gave the clearest indication that Bayern view him as the perfect replacement for the outgoing Thomas Tuchel. At a Munich Trade Fair, the 72-year-old said: “He [Alonso] has proved that he can be a coach for the big time.
“There are hardly any suitable coaches who are currently free. Rather they are coaches who are under contract somewhere and possibly have great success.
“And that makes it much more difficult because clubs like Liverpool, Real Madrid, Leverkusen and FC Bayern are working on it [securing Alonso]. It’s not so easy to tell them that Bayern is the measure of all things.”
While Alonso has been linked with Madrid, current boss Carlo Ancelotti has Real leading La Liga by eight points. He also extended his contract at the Bernabeu by another two years before the turn of the year.
Liverpool have also been linked with Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim.
