Latest Liverpool news: Ex-Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann has issued a warning to Xabi Alonso about his next club while Jordan Henderson faces a return.
Liverpool can get its hands on a first trophy of the season with the Carabao Cup up for grabs against Chelsea this weekend. Off the field, there continues to be more speculation over who will replace Jürgen Klopp, with Xabi Alonso seemingly having a big decision on his hands. Meanwhile, ex-Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson will be heading back to English soil next month. Here’s your round-up of the latest Liverpool news.
Julian Nagelsmann sends Xabi Alonso warning
Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann has warned Xabi Alonso about taking over at Bayern Munich this summer. Alonso has been linked with the Liverpool job ever since Jürgen Klopp announced his plans to leave the club.
But Bayern will part ways with Thomas Tuchel in the summer and The Guardian is among those to claim it will now target Alonso. Nagelsmann was sacked by Bayern in March last year despite winning the title in his first season in charge and he has told the Spaniard he will have more time to prove himself at Anfield.
“I was signed by Bayern with the proviso that I would change things,” he told Der Spiegel. “There are clubs that give you time. Jürgen Klopp was at Liverpool for five years before he became champion there for the first time.
“Pep Guardiola only won the Champions League title with Manchester City after seven years. The coaches at Bayern Munich don’t get as much time to develop something. It also doesn’t help if you have a good relationship with the decision-makers. We discussed how we would deal with a worst-case scenario together. But then everything turned out differently.”
Jordan Henderson set for England return
Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson will make his return to England next month after Ajax was drawn to face Aston Villa in the Europa Conference League. Henderson joined the Dutch giants in January after ending his spell in Saudi Arabia.
The midfielder is yet to be involved in a victory with his new side after four appearances. He was not involved on Thursday night as his teammates beat FK Bodø/Glimt in extra time to secure a place in the last 16.
And Ajax will now come up against Unai Emery’s Aston Villa, who is the favorite to win the competition. Villa had already booked its place in Friday’s draw after winning its group stage.
Ajax, meanwhile, has slipped to fifth in Eredivisie and faces a battle to qualify for the Champions League next season. It is also a staggering 26 points behind league leader PSV Eindhoven.
