USA Basketball has officially unveiled its 12-man roster for the August 2026 FIBA Men’s World Cup Qualifying Window, and the announcement has immediately sparked plenty of attention around the American basketball landscape.
Rather than assembling a star-studded NBA lineup filled with household names, USA Basketball has once again taken a different approach for the qualifying window. The roster features a fascinating mixture of players with NBA, NBA G League and international experience, along with several athletes who have previously represented the United States on the international stage.
The timing could hardly be more important.
The United States is entering the second round of qualifying for the 2027 FIBA Men’s World Cup, and every game now carries significant weight. The Americans will travel to Chile on Aug. 27 before returning home to face Colombia in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 31. USA Basketball has confirmed that Terry Stotts will lead the team as head coach. And while this roster may not have the glamour associated with an Olympic or World Cup championship squad, there is a very important reason fans should be paying attention.
This team has a job to do.
The 12-Man Roster Is Officially Set
The August qualifying team includes Jaron Blossomgame, Pedro Bradshaw, Garrison Brooks, Darius Brown, Kevon Harris, Mike James, DeJon Jarreau, Dillon Jones, James Nunnally, Orlando Robinson, Tyler Smith and Cole Swider.
Eight of the 12 players have previous USA Basketball experience, while four members of the group — Blossomgame, Brown, Jarreau and Jones — are set to compete for USA Basketball for the first time.
That combination gives the roster an intriguing balance between familiarity and opportunity.
Several players are also coming into this window with very recent international experience. Bradshaw, Harris, James and Robinson were part of the United States team that went 2-0 on the road during the previous qualifying window in July, defeating the Dominican Republic and Mexico.
That experience could prove extremely valuable.
International basketball can be very different from the NBA. The court dimensions, officiating, defensive schemes, physicality and overall style can create challenges for players who are accustomed to the NBA game. Having players who already understand the demands of FIBA competition gives the United States an important advantage.
Mike James Leads a Group With International Experience
One of the most recognizable names on the roster is Mike James.
James brings an enormous amount of professional and international basketball experience to the team. His familiarity with high-level competition gives the United States another experienced presence in the backcourt.
James is also among the players who most recently represented the U.S. during the July qualifying window. That means the team will not have to spend valuable preparation time introducing him to the system or helping him adjust to the international environment.
The same applies to Kevon Harris, Pedro Bradshaw and Orlando Robinson, who also participated in the previous qualifying window.
Their continuity could become one of the biggest advantages of this roster.
Instead of building everything from scratch, the coaching staff can maintain elements that worked during the previous two games while integrating the newcomers into the rotation.
Four Players Are Getting Their First USA Basketball Opportunity
Perhaps one of the most interesting parts of the announcement is the opportunity being handed to four players.
Jaron Blossomgame, Darius Brown, DeJon Jarreau and Dillon Jones will make their USA Basketball debuts during this window.
For those players, this is much bigger than simply appearing on an international roster.
Representing the United States can become a significant milestone in a player’s career. It provides an opportunity to play alongside experienced professionals, compete under a coaching staff with a different tactical approach and demonstrate what they can do on an international stage.
It also creates a chance for these players to establish themselves within the broader USA Basketball program.
With the 2027 World Cup approaching, every qualifying window can potentially introduce players who could become part of future national-team plans.
Cole Swider and Tyler Smith Also Return to the USA Basketball Picture
The roster also includes players whose previous USA Basketball experiences came at different stages of their development.
Cole Swider returns to the program for the first time since participating in the 2018 Nike Hoop Summit, while Tyler Smith previously participated in the 2022 USA Men’s Junior National Team October minicamp.
That makes the upcoming window another opportunity for both players to demonstrate how much they have developed since those earlier experiences.
James Nunnally also brings USA Basketball experience, having suited up for the United States during the 2021 FIBA Men’s AmeriCup Qualifying campaign.
Meanwhile, Garrison Brooks played during Window 1 of the current World Cup qualifying cycle.
The roster therefore contains players who have experienced USA Basketball at different levels and at different points in their careers.
Terry Stotts Takes Charge
Another major storyline is the appointment of Terry Stotts as head coach.
The former NBA head coach will be taking charge of a USA Basketball team for the first time.
Stotts will be assisted by Clay Moser and Marlon Garnett, both of whom were part of the coaching staff during the first three qualifying windows.
Jonathan Yim will also join the staff as a scout. USA Basketball noted that Yim brings experience from the NBA, NBA G League, NCAA and international levels.
For Stotts, this represents a new chapter and a different coaching challenge.
Coaching a national team during World Cup qualifying requires a different approach from coaching an NBA team over an 82-game season. The preparation time is limited, players arrive from different teams and systems, and coaches have to quickly establish chemistry and tactical discipline.
Stotts will therefore have to maximize every practice.
The United States Cannot Afford to Take These Games Lightly
The importance of the upcoming games becomes even clearer when looking at the standings.
After the first three qualifying windows, the United States finished the first phase with a 5-1 record.
But the second round has produced a new group and a new challenge.
The Americans currently sit second in Group E behind unbeaten Brazil, which has a 6-0 record. The United States is ahead of the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Colombia and Chile.
The top three teams in the group will qualify for the 2027 FIBA Men’s World Cup, along with the best fourth-place team from Groups E or F.
That means the United States has positioned itself well — but qualification is not yet guaranteed.
The margin for error is smaller now.
Chile, Colombia and the other teams in the group have their own World Cup ambitions, and every victory matters as the qualifying campaign moves toward its conclusion.
Chile Comes First
The first challenge arrives on Aug. 27 when the United States travels to Santiago to face Chile.
That game will test how quickly the newly assembled roster can come together.
Road games in international competition can be particularly difficult. The United States will have to deal with the travel, the environment and a Chilean team determined to take advantage of playing at home.
The Americans cannot afford a slow start.
A strong performance in Chile would immediately put the team in a better position heading into the second game of the window.
Colombia Awaits in Washington
Four days later, the United States will return home to face Colombia in Washington, D.C.
The game is scheduled for Aug. 31 and provides the Americans with an opportunity to capitalize on home-court advantage.
But Colombia should not be overlooked.
The Colombian team enters the second round with a 3-3 record, meaning it is still firmly in the qualification picture. A victory over the United States would be enormously valuable for Colombia, making this another game where the Americans will need to be fully focused.
For the U.S., winning both games would be the ideal outcome.
Two victories could strengthen its position in Group E and provide important momentum heading into the November window.
The Bigger Picture: The 2027 World Cup
Ultimately, these two August games are part of something much bigger.
The qualification process runs across six windows from November 2025 through March 2027, with 80 national teams competing for 32 places at the 2027 FIBA Men’s World Cup in Doha, Qatar.
The FIBA Americas region has seven World Cup spots available.
The United States has historically been one of the strongest teams in the competition, and its qualifying record reflects that dominance. Under the current format, which dates back to the 2019 FIBA World Cup cycle, the Americans have compiled a 24-6 record and finished first in their respective group in both the 2019 and 2023 qualifying campaigns.
The United States has also won two of the last four FIBA World Cups, in 2010 and 2014.
But past success does not automatically guarantee future qualification.
That is why this 12-man roster matters.
It may not contain the biggest stars in American basketball, but these players have been selected for a specific purpose: to win qualifying games and keep the United States on track for Doha.
A Different Kind of USA Team
That may ultimately be the most fascinating aspect of the entire announcement.
This is not necessarily the team that will represent the United States at the 2027 World Cup.
Instead, it is a qualifying team built around availability, experience, continuity and chemistry.
And that makes the August window particularly intriguing.
For the returning players, it is an opportunity to build on what they accomplished in July.
For the four USA Basketball newcomers, it is a chance to make an immediate impression.
For Terry Stotts, it is the beginning of his first assignment with USA Basketball.
And for the United States as a whole, it is another critical step toward securing a place on basketball’s biggest international stage.
The first test comes in Chile on Aug. 27.
