After earning nearly $53 million last season, James chose to take a veteran-minimum contract, making it clear that his decision was driven by one goal: winning another NBA championship.
“This is my last decision. I’m not going for money. I’m not going for family. What am I really playing for at this point? I still want to sacrifice. I still want to work. I still want to grind. I still want to compete, to win and to have a chance at the feeling of winning another championship,” James wrote in a statement on X.

James revealed that he seriously considered retirement after the Lakers’ season ended. However, after taking time to reflect, he realized his passion for basketball remained as strong as ever.
According to Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul, the four-time NBA champion prioritized “basketball happiness” and the best opportunity to compete for another title over financial gain. Several contenders—including the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, and Golden State Warriors—were in the mix before Philadelphia ultimately secured his commitment.
